WarPlan is a World War II simulation engine by Kraken Studios that blends realism with playability. It targets easy-to-learn, hard-to-master gameplay, offering a deep engine with a flexible database to recreate the Second World War in rich detail.

  • Scale and Map: 70 potential countries on a hex map with a scale of 30 miles / 50 km per hex (Peters scaling for realistic distances). The terrain and logistics framework cover land, air, and sea operations with authentic constraints.
  • Forces and Reach: Land forces scale from 15k to 60k men, air activity comprises 300–400 aircraft, and naval power centers on 2 capital ships plus support vessels. Naval units form fleets; hexes host one land, one air, and one fleet element.
  • Combat System: Land combats use operation points for multi-hex offensives and flexible tactics to push through the frontline. Air actions can target specific objectives and automatically support land operations. Sea actions include fleet and raider modes with various detection mechanics, plus night actions and carrier, surface, and submarine warfare. A Zone of Control restricts enemy movement to emphasize positioning and planning.
  • Units and Customization: 20 unit types with 15 attributes, 17 technological advancements, and 5 specialties. Each country fields units with distinct characteristics. Units can undergo breakdown, formation changes, and general-led effects; 11 support types bolster capabilities. Land units can gain equipment and elite traits, enabling up to around 120 land unit configurations; overall, 47 unit configurations are available through advancements.
  • Production and Supply: Country management covers oil, manpower, logistics, strategic resources, and trade agreements with convoy zones. A robust advancement system (17 options per unit, minimum two choices) feeds ongoing improvements. Supply relies on cities, rail and port infrastructure, headquarters, and distance from rail lines, with a design inspired by the North African Campaign’s logistical realities.
  • Diplomacy and Loyalty: Diplomacy includes war declarations, influence, coups, and surrender options. Countries have loyalty scores and entry thresholds; actions during play can alter both loyalty and entry conditions, creating dynamic political consequences.
  • Map, Weather, and Fog of War: The hex map features 15 terrain types, multiple movement options, airfield capacity, and defensive bonuses. There are 12 resource types and 5 strategic resources. Fog of War with detection levels and five weather conditions adds strategic uncertainty and planning depth.
  • Modes and Modding: Play against the AI, in hotseat, or PBEM multiplayer. WarPlan includes an editor for modding and scenario creation, enabling players to craft custom campaigns and challenges.
