Samsara

Samsara is a souls-like action RPG rooted in Buddhist mythology. Based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead, you inhabit the Bardo—the in-between state between death and rebirth—trapped in the dying world of Kamadhātu. You have 49 days to find a path to escape Samsara, or be drawn back into the endless cycle of birth and suffering.

The journey is a meditation on impermanence and the pursuit of enlightenment. Your choices, battles, and conversations shape your fate as you seek the true nature of reality and the possibility of Nirvana.

Gameplay pillars

1. Rebirth

Everything in Samsara exists in cycles of life, death, and rebirth. Through a Karma system, you reincarnate as one of seven avatars after each death. Your past-life actions determine your form and abilities. Death is not defeat—it is growth and progression. Positive and negative Karma crystallize into Karmic Seeds (experience) you spend to upgrade stats, unlock powers, or gear you for the next life.

• Manusya — Smaller and balanced; the only avatar capable of escaping. A jack-of-all-trades with protective and control abilities.
• Deva — Merciful beings who glide and wield magic; healing and illusion magic.
• Asura — Righteous fury; multi-armed warrior who channels all five elements and self-buffs.
• Naraka — Trickster with fearsome ranged magic; debuffs and battlefield manipulation.
• Tiryag — Keen animal instincts; astral travel and time-slowing combat support.
• Preta — Avarice incarnate; drains enemies, senses hidden treasures, and afflicts foes over time.

2. Conflict

Engage in tight, rewarding combat with classic souls-like systems: dodge, parry, block, and strike to build Focus. Mantras (chants) grant special effects, while Mudras (hand-gestures) unleash potent spells. A wide array of weapons, elements, and equipment lets you tailor each life. You determine the path—violence or pacifism—and Karma shapes your destiny.

3. Discourse

Kamadhātu is a projection of your dying mind. Converse with apparitions of strangers and confront moral choices. The tempter Mara will challenge you with difficult dilemmas—aid or resist, gain power or risk the cycle. Your decisions influence outcomes and the road you take back into the world or toward enlightenment.

4. Exploration

Traverse Kamadhātu’s dreamscapes—non-Euclidean paths, fractal shortcuts, and portals link distant realms. From Mt. Meru at the center to four vast continents, explore lush jungles, ancient ruins, scorching dunes, and glittering icy peaks. Will you ascend to the gods or descend deeper into the realms of fire and gold?
