Solstice
Solstice is a very retro wargame that honors the spirit of classic strategy titles from the 80s and 90s. It is not a remake of Lords of Midnight, Doomdark’s Revenge, or Sorderon’s Shadow, but it takes its lead from those games to deliver a fresh, challenging turn-based, menu-driven experience for enthusiasts who crave depth and atmosphere.
Visuals are rendered in hand-drawn artwork with a distinctive pseudo-3D technique, often described as landscaping, that mirrors the look and feel of the era while supporting strategic play and immersion.
Set in the mythic realm of Dourfrost, a land trapped in eternal winter where magic, monsters, and war intertwine, Solstice invites you to explore and battle across an open world. The game features 11 different mythical races at launch and well over 120 unique characters, each with distinct likes, dislikes, needs, aims, desires, and loyalties that drive the conflicts and alliances you form.
The initial release centers on one formidable scenario: The Rise of the Demon King. As old grudges and fragile pacts fray, a dark power surges from the south. Sator Grimward, a sorcerer long thought defeated, has resurfaced and united the Ice Guard. Calith, king of the Free Folk, must rally lords and ladies from diverse races—Freefolk, Dwarfs, Fey, Sidhe, Giants, and six more—to withstand the rising storm and reclaim the land from impending domination.
Gameplay emphasizes strategic choice and faction dynamics. Players navigate a vast open world, manage resources and loyalties, and guide armies through turn-based confrontations and carefully planned maneuvers. The game emphasizes atmosphere, character-driven politics, and a classic, menu-driven flow that rewards careful planning and long-term strategy over quick reflexes.
JimJams Games, a small indie development team, channels a deep affection for retro gaming. Their mission is to create true, classic-styled titles that evoke the era’s feel, while delivering a polished experience rich with detail. They aspire not to produce AAA productions, but to share a passionate homage to a time gone by with players who love nostalgic, thematically bold strategy games.
