Spain at War is a complete standalone strategy game that recreates the Spanish Civil War from July 1936 to April 1939, using weekly turns that begin on 18 July 1936. The game challenges you to shepherd the war from the first clash to the path to capitulation, through carefully balanced planning and battlefield decisions.
As the Nationalist player, you deploy Africa's professional units to the Peninsula, pushing to control key cities and force the Republic to surrender. As the Republican player, your task is to delay the opposing advance, build the Popular Army, and prepare veteran units capable of facing the regular army and its seasoned formations. The game models the conflicting strategic aims of both sides with a focus on timing, logistics, and political pressure.
Spain at War is a detailed, highly authentic simulation. You will encounter a full spectrum of forces historically involved in the conflict, including Falangist and Carlist militias, every unit from Africa’s Army, dozens of Republican militia formations, Italian air squadrons with their true names and insignia, the warships of both sides, the International Brigades battalions, Basque, Asturian and Catalan units, Anarchist militias, the Soviet T-26, I-15 Chatos and I-16 Moscas, the Kondor Legion’s Bf 109s, and much more. The scale and variety are designed to reproduce the feel of the war with accuracy and depth.
Resource and unit management lies at the heart of the experience. Players must judiciously allocate industrial capacity to recruit new units or replace weakened ones, while certain units—ships and elite formations—cannot be rebuilt. A robust card system injects variability across reinforcements, economics, diplomacy, politics, popular support, and combat, ensuring that no two games play alike. Historical events appear to give the campaign its chromatic texture, enhancing immersion and sense of moment in the period.
The game benefits fromMiguel Santacruz’s deep knowledge of the period, applied with care by the designer and the SGS team, supported by extensive research and bibliography to ensure historical feel and accuracy. You’ll find a major campaign scenario that spans the entire war and a shorter scenario in which the Republic still holds out in 1939. There are also plans for engaging what-if scenarios to explore alternate paths through history.
Playtime: from 1 hour to many hours, depending on scenario and player style. Favored Side: none. Hardest to Play: Republicans.
