Strategic Command: American Civil War

Step into the most expansive Civil War strategic experience yet. This turn-based game lets you guide the United States or the Confederacy through a pivotal era of innovation and battle, with decisions that determine whether the Union remains united or succumbs to division.

Explore a massive 66,000-hex map spanning North America from Canada to the Caribbean at a 15 km / 9 mile scale—the largest hex map ever offered in the series. Build, train, and deploy armies formed from volunteers into Brigades, Divisions, and Corps, while conducting research to improve weapons and combat skills. Lead renowned generals—Lee, Jackson, Grant, McClellan, Beauregard, Sherman—and make critical command choices that can tilt the war.

Navigate rivers and waterways with new rivercraft, inland ports, and amphibious options. On the seas, command river, coastal, and sea-going ships, including wood and ironclads, with an emphasis on riverine warfare and naval tech, such as naval engines and ironclads.

Chess the fog of war with enhanced reconnaissance: cavalry scouts, infantry detachments, partisan rangers, armored trains, and observation balloons—giving you real-time strategic depth in an era before radio communications.

Diplomacy and international politics matter: Europe can intervene, with the UK, France, and Spain potentially backing the Confederacy. Emancipation decisions and cotton policy can shift foreign involvement and the war’s outcome.

Experience six campaigns spanning the conflict: 1861 Blue and Gray; 1861 Manassas to Appomattox; 1862 Scott’s Great Snake; 1862 Trent War (Alternate History: UK recognition); 1863 Lee Rides North; 1864 Make Georgia Howl. New unit types—Balloons, Rangers, Monitors, River Gunboats—and technologies such as Skirmishers and the Field Telegraph deepen strategic options.

The game supports official mods, offering two new map styles plus the classic style, and includes an Editor to craft campaigns or mods. Fortress defenses along coasts and inland ports play a larger role, guarded by pre-war fortifications known to both sides. Optional toggles let you deactivate partisan scripts, event popups, or European intervention mechanics for tailored play.

Built on an enhanced engine used in WWI and WWII titles, Strategic Command: American Civil War delivers a deeper, larger-scale strategy experience for veterans and newcomers alike.
