Lupus in Fabula
Lupus in Fabula is an adventure game with light puzzle elements set in a world where Flemish Renaissance aesthetics collide with glitched medieval times after a failed magical transport. You control two protagonists, switching between them as the tale unfolds, guiding them through a chain of environments that mix era and whimsy.
Escaping a sequence of dungeons while evading a grotesque bestiary, the duo is under constant scrutiny by an enigmatic pair of observers: an alien duo whose visages echo a French philosopher Voltaire and a Venetian Renaissance painter Tiziano. A common Raven circles above, taking a keen interest in the protagonists’ plight as the story weaves onward.
The game offers a total of 21 levels. The first twenty are self-contained dungeons of varying length, each designed with maps tailored to the puzzles and to the two controllable characters. The final level unfolds in a village possessed by the “evil shaggy one,” delivering a conclusive wrap to the narrative arc.
A rich tapestry of influences informs the experience. Visuals pay homage to old masters while the atmosphere nods to quirky and gothic media, drawing inspiration from Lost in Space, Black Adder, and Monty Python. Lyrical and literary threads echo Gargantua & Pantagruel and Decameron, while the world’s mood and imagery borrow from painters like Pieter Brueghel and Van Eyck, interlaced with medieval superstitions and bestiary lore.
Key features include an array of unusual locations and characters, a continuous story that binds puzzles to the developing plot, and ambient sound and music that heighten the dark ages ambiance. The puzzle design adopts a non-punishing approach—progress tends to be achieved when the right combination is found, rather than forcefully trying every possible object on everything.
Completing the journey also rewards players with 15 Renaissance-era achievements to pursue, encouraging exploration and replay to uncover every facet of this peculiar, cross-temporal world. Lupus in Fabula blends humor, mystery, and a velvet-dark mood to deliver a distinctively atmospheric adventure where time itself feels a little tangled, but the path forward remains clear with each clever discovery.
