Introduced in the 1960s as part of a modernisation plan, the Class 52 was distinctive due to its hydraulic transmission, setting it apart from the diesel-electric options favored by other regions.
With a top speed of 90 mph and reports of unofficial speeds reaching 110 mph, the Class 52 defined express operations throughout the 1960s and 1970s before being phased out in 1977. Today, a mere seven of the original 74 locomotives remain, with some operating on heritage railways like the West Somerset Railway.
