IL-2 Sturmovik: Sopwith Snipe Collector Plane description

Sopwith Snipe Collector Plane in IL-2 Sturmovik

The Sopwith Snipe, a renowned British fighter aircraft, was developed as a superior replacement for the Camel, introduced during World War I. With its powerful Bentley B.R.2 engine delivering an impressive 234 HP, the Snipe was designed to counter the emergence of enemy fighters effectively. Initial prototypes retained features from the Camel, but later iterations showcased a refined rectangular fuselage with rounded edges and reinforced biplane wings.

Although production began in the summer of 1918, delays meant that only 77 of the planned 200 aircraft were completed by the end of August. In total, around 1567 units were delivered, and several design enhancements followed, including increased surfaces for both the vertical stabilizer and upper wing ailerons.

The Sopwith Snipe made its combat debut on September 26, 1918, with only a few squadrons utilizing it before the war's end. Featuring two Vickers Mk.I machine guns and a potential bomb load of up to 51 kg, it became a lethal choice in the hands of skilled pilots. Major W.G. Barker famously engaged multiple enemy aircraft, showcasing the Snipe's capabilities. This historic aircraft is now available in IL-2 Sturmovik, enhancing the gameplay experience with its detailed modeling and historical significance.
