Liminal Border: Part I

Liminal Border: Part I is a visual novel that opens a four‑part saga. It follows Itsuki Ninomae, a high‑school geek who spends his time polishing fan videos. His hobby takes a dark turn when a frantic montage inspired by action clips accidentally yields a real power: digital hypnotism, a ability to entrance anyone who watches the film.

Itsuki’s chance encounter with Rin Akinashi, his long‑time classmate who masks a sharp, calculating nature behind perfect grades and charm, propels him into a dangerous proposition. Rin proposes turning the hypnotism into a lucrative business, one that threads through the shadows of society. She orchestrates the enterprise from behind the scenes, while Itsuki and Hina Yorozuya run the day‑to‑day operations, keeping Rin’s traceable involvement off the map.

Hina Yorozuya, Itsuki’s classmate and Part I’s heroine, joins the enterprise under pressure from her home life. Cautious of relationships and the opposite sex, she nevertheless forms a surprising affinity for Itsuki and backs the venture with skill, cunning, and a knack for cooking—especially Japanese curry. The trio is augmented by a web of allies and enforcers who blur lines between school life and a creeping underworld.

Key figures extend beyond the classroom doors. Kotoko Teshigawara is the daughter of a yakuza boss and staunch believer in benevolence and justice, who authorizes the project under her supervision. Meryl Hathaway, a mysterious companion to Kotoko, appears fragile but reveals extraordinary composure in emergencies. Tatsuya Yorozuya, Hina’s older brother and leader of the rough‑and‑tumble group DREAD, is unafraid to bend rules and use force when needed, backed by yakuza money. Shiori Iida, Rin’s close classmate and popular with the boys, adds another layer of social dynamic. Koji, a DREAD member, follows orders, while Shoji, a computer‑savvy teacher at Badman Academy, lends technical support to the operation.

Itsuki’s central struggle is clear: a town’s shadows pull him deeper as the film’s hypnotic power grows, threatening his ethics and safety. The narrative explores manipulation, power, money, and the costs of stepping off the side of the line. As Itsuki and Rin chase profit, Hina’s loyalty—and the ever‑present danger of the underworld—tests their bonds. No one may be watching the same world anymore after the first pulse of the digital hypnotism movie.

This opening chapter sets the stakes for a saga that blends school life with criminal intrigue, leaving Itsuki to decide how far he will go to survive a game where perception can be weaponized and trust is a currency no one can truly own.
