The structure is no silent ruin: it’s a lethal machine of ancient design, still guarded by relentless automatons and filled with secrets the expedition is unprepared to face. As an elite mercenary, you’re the expedition’s best chance to push deeper, survive what remains inside, and uncover revelations that could reshape humanity’s understanding of itself.

Combat blends RPG depth with skill-based precision. Choose from three distinct weapon archetypes—Glaive, Mace & Shield, or Cannon—each with its own core moveset and playstyle. Victory depends on mastering timing: land perfectly timed strikes, deflects, and parries, and trigger enhanced effects on certain abilities when executed with ideal precision. As you progress, you’ll acquire powerful equipment and fine-tune your character through an extensive modification system, shaping a build that fits your preferred approach to every encounter.

Abilities and progression are central to your growth. Discover dozens of abilities spanning damage, defense, healing, mobility, and utility. Some of the most impactful powers are hidden or locked behind lengthy quests, rewarding explorers and completionists alike. Character customization is equally robust: craft your own look through a wide range of creation options or choose from 30 presets to jump straight into the action. Select a background that provides a unique backstory and starting gear, and occasionally unlock special dialogue choices tied to your origins.

Your choices matter beyond combat. Each expedition member has a personal questline with multiple endings determined by your decisions—and failure is possible. Paying attention to allies and following through can lead to major rewards, but only if you stay committed.

Cartograms define how you enter the Monolith’s levels and are one of Empyreal’s signature systems. These ancient artifacts act as blueprints that shape what you face inside: enemy types, loot, elemental hazards, available lives, and more are influenced through randomized attributes. While levels are handcrafted, exploration is heavily rewarded with hidden details, shortcuts, and secrets. Every Cartogram culminates in a boss battle, and the chosen Cartogram determines the boss’s loot table—letting you target gear for future runs.

Though primarily single-player, Empyreal includes asynchronous features that echo other players’ presence. Share and trade items (including Cartograms) through a Mail system and Trading Post, or use Into the Aether to gift an item to another player, transforming it into an Aether Touched version with a significant stat boost.
