The Shell Part III: Paradiso is the final chapter of the dark mystery trilogy born from the infamous Girl In Shell case—pulling Detective Reiji Tokisaka back into a last investigation where every remaining thread of his life is at stake.
Showa 33 (1958). In a bitter January, a funeral is held under heavy, gray snow. The imprisoned painter Shinzo Mamiya has died only weeks after the Blessed Congregation’s crimes were exposed. Reiji is asked by museum curator Maris Stella to help sort through Mamiya’s belongings, but what they uncover in his studio is far worse than a forgotten keepsake: an unannounced painting of a one-winged angel with no arms. They name the work Exile Of Paradise—a piece as mesmerizing as it is unsettling, and disturbingly reminiscent of Mamiya’s notorious masterpiece.
Days later, a woman’s body is discovered—altered to match the painting. The victim is tied to Tomoyuki Masaki, and the case begins to warp into something more personal, more obsessive, and more inevitable. The chain that began with Girl In Shell tightens again, hinting that there may be no one left capable of breaking it… except one small girl.
Paradiso brings back a cast shaped by loss, guilt, and fixation: Reiji, still chasing a vanished girl; his sister Yukari, an aspiring artist struggling to choose her future; Masaki, emotionally distant yet stubbornly loyal; and allies like reporter Toji Aoki, coroner Natsume Takashiro, and the enigmatic Maris herself—whose connection to art and past cases runs deeper than she admits. Meanwhile, the shadow of Toko Kuchiki and the tragedy surrounding her continues to haunt the present.
