Vartio (Finnish for “Patrol”) is a short, focused psychological horror experience from the creators of Kaamos, placing you in the role of a medieval guardsman assigned to a solitary night watch at the empire’s edge.

Your orders are simple: patrol the forests surrounding a remote watchtower and return with a report for your commander. But the woods feel wrong—too quiet in places, too loud in others—and the deeper you go, the more it seems that something is out there with you.

Patrol the darkness
Step into cold, shadowy woodland with only a faint torch to cut through the night. As a lone sentry on duty, you’re exposed, isolated, and forced to push forward even when every instinct tells you to turn back.

Hear what you can’t see
Vartio leans on paranoia and uncertainty rather than loud spectacle. You’ll find yourself listening for clues: the rustle of brush, the creak of a branch, the suggestion of movement just beyond the torchlight. Are those footsteps—or just the wind playing tricks on a tired mind?

Reality starts to fray
As the patrol continues, the forest becomes a place where assumptions fail. Whispers carry through the trees. Blood trails hint at violence nearby. You may spot signs of a raider… or something far worse. The line between threat and imagination blurs, and certainty becomes a luxury you can’t afford.

Key features

  • ~20-minute standalone horror story set in the same unsettling world as Kaamos
  • Immersive 3D pixel art with a dark retro aesthetic
  • Atmospheric sound design built to amplify tension and doubt
  • A compact experience centered on isolation, vigilance, and creeping dread

You were sent to watch the woods.
But tonight, the woods may be watching back.
