Shadows of the Ruins is a 2D Roguelike–Survivor title from InTheNight Games that blends exploration, fast paced combat, and careful resource management in a hostile and dynamic world. Each dungeon run is a race against time as you push deeper into the fallen empire’s ruins while danger closes in.

In a world where the Evil Empire fell but the promised Age of Light never arrived, a village sinks into misery. The soil is dead, animals are gone, and winter threatens extinction. West of the village lies the ruins of the old empire, said to guard a legendary treasure capable of ending famine forever. You play as a young adventurer who ventures into these ruins to loot the treasure, hoping to save your people. But a relentless Horde of tormented souls presses forward, turning each moment into a test of speed and nerve as you face traps, monsters, and the shadows of the empire’s fallen army.

Gameplay centers on unique dungeon runs created by procedural generation. You explore four danger room types in every descent: Enemy Rooms, Traps Rooms, Puzzle Rooms, and Boss Rooms. With more than 30 distinct rooms, the dungeon presents endless combinations of monsters, hazards, and riddles, ensuring that no two runs are the same.

As you battle through foes, you earn experience to level up and unlock new options. Each level lets you choose a characteristic charm that shapes your playstyle and grants access to different strategies. Treasures gathered along the way serve as both currency for upgrades and a healing resource, demanding careful management. Will you retreat to invest and strengthen your position, or press onward in pursuit of greater rewards before the Horde closes in?

Upgrades are purchased in a shop using collected treasures, offering mystical bonuses to offense, defense, or survivability. The decision to flee or push forward becomes a core strategic element, influencing your trajectory through the ruins and your odds of discovering the legendary treasure.

The constant threat of the infinite Horde adds urgent pacing to every encounter. Survive the onslaught, defeat bosses, solve puzzles, and navigate traps to reach the treasure and secure the village’s future. Can you outlast the pressure, master the dungeon’s ever changing layouts, and emerge with hope for your people?

This project originated as a Master’s Final Project at the European University of Madrid, developed by a dedicated student team with support from the university’s production staff.
