Land Run description

Land Run is a one-man strategy card game set in the land scramble of the western frontier. This PC title, developed with Unity, puts you in the shoes of Black slaves drawn into the “Land Run Tournament” by their owners’ greed, with freedom and land as the prize.

The core idea is fast and tense card play where a single card advances your horse toward the opponent. Each turn you play one card and your horse moves one space in the opponent’s direction. If the horse crosses the opponent’s boundary, the attack succeeds. Achieve three successful boundary breaches to win the round. The game emphasizes timing and order over raw card values — except for five special cards, the impact of number size is kept subtle.

The strategic depth comes from choosing when to use cards, deploying items that push back or leap ahead, and controlling the moment of crossing the boundary. Items can reverse the opponent’s advance, jump multiple spaces, or alter timing, keeping a comeback possible even in a bad position.

If the boundary breakthrough does not occur three times before the deck is exhausted, victory is decided by score. You add the sum of cards left in hand to the sum of unused physical-strength cards to determine the final result. This creates two winning paths: a direct attack victory by breaking through three times quickly, or a score victory achieved by careful hand and deck management as the game runs out.

The game unfolds in a tournament format: you face several contestants in sequence, each with a distinct disposition — from aggressive early presses to those who unleash everything in the second half. The same rules apply, but your strategy adapts to whether you chase an attack win or a point victory. A round lasts roughly 10 to 15 minutes, designed for quick attempts and repeated plays to discover your own winning pattern.

Control is mouse-only and purposely intuitive: simply select a card to play, while the weight of your decision depends on the horse’s location, the number of cards left, and the remaining strength cards. The interface emphasizes the imagery of forward movement, retreat, and pushes as you navigate toward freedom.

Visually and thematically, Land Run blends desolate land maps, old gambling tables, and bar bulletin boards to create a historical vibe. The main character’s progress toward freedom is reflected as the horse advances, giving a sense of epic purpose as you approach the ground you strive to claim.

Land Run is a thoughtful reflection on the contradictions and madness of the Western Pioneering Era, told through the frame of a competitive tournament where Black slaves fight for their owners yet aim to win their own freedom within the same rules and rounds.
