The Mushroom Journal description
The Mushroom Journal
Step away from city stress and into the quiet woods of Mush Meadows. After selling everything to start over, you buy an abandoned cabin and settle into a slower life close to nature. Inside, you find signs of the cabin’s previous owner—a dedicated mushroom enthusiast—along with a forgotten basket and an unfinished Mushroom Journal. As you flip through its worn pages, you notice missing entries and incomplete notes, hinting at a mystery that lingers in the forest.
Your days are spent roaming through beautiful woodland paths, searching for mushrooms and learning to recognize them with care. The heart of the game is the journal itself: use it to identify mushrooms by selecting the correct traits. Study each specimen’s defining features—cap, gills, and stem—then match what you see to complete an entry. Accuracy matters: you may only pick mushrooms if you’re 100% sure of what they are.
Mushrooms aren’t just a hobby in Mush Meadows—they’re essential. The small, close-knit community depends on them for food, trade, and medicine. The locals are eager to meet you, especially after so long without an “outsider” around. By introducing yourself and spending time with your new neighbors, you’ll build new friendships and take on requests that tie your foraging skills to the needs of the town.
Cozy, nature-focused, and driven by careful observation, The Mushroom Journal combines exploration with thoughtful identification mechanics and light community-driven goals. It’s a game about slowing down, paying attention, and finding a new rhythm among trees, trails, and the people who call Mush Meadows home.
Created as a student project in three months, the game’s concept, art, audio, and implementation were fully produced by its small team: Alexandra (art & animation), Dániel János Simon (game design & audio design), Emilia Kurkela (art, VFX & UI), Sari Ala-Ukko (level design, narrative & composition), and Tua Nylund (programming & implementation).
