Poolscape description

Poolscape

Poolscape invites you to relive the nostalgia of classic PSX-era gameplay through authentic ’90s‑styled visuals and quirks such as color dithering, vertex snapping, and distance culling. Eschewing ultra realism, the game emphasizes atmosphere and exploration, channeling a liminal space mood built from original hardware limitations: low‑res textures, low‑poly models, pixelation, distance fog, and deliberate visual quirks that invite quiet curiosity rather than fast reflexes.

At its core, Poolscape is a walking simulator designed for immersion. You’ll wander six uniquely themed Poolrooms, each with its own ambient soundscape and map layout. A central hub replaces the traditional main menu, with waterslides spawning you to each level. An original ambient soundtrack underpins the journey, while scattered notes reveal lore and deepen the mystery of these strange environments. An optional VHS filter can be toggled via interaction with the VHS Tape in the Sky Pools, giving the game a Puppet Combo‑inspired look.

Beyond atmosphere, the game offers a touch of Weirdcore: a non‑harmful entity quietly observes as you traverse, adding a subtle sense of presence without confrontation. Some levels include light platforming sections, paired with a forgiving respawn system so curiosity never has to fear an endless fall. While designed to relax and encourage exploration, Poolscape rewards careful wandering with environmental storytelling and texture‑rich soundscapes that shift with each location.

Poolscape launches with six levels, some newly crafted for this title and others drawing from familiar Poolrooms lore. Additional levels are planned for post‑launch, expanding the liminal world you can drift through. Each level promises a distinct mood and set pieces to keep journeys fresh on future playthroughs.

  • Level 1 — Classic Poolrooms: endlessly repeating tiles and fake skylights create a comforting yet uncanny retro atmosphere.
  • Level 2 — The Aquatic Megastructure: a vast brutalist complex whose enormous scale evokes a sense of megalophobia.
  • Level 3 — Dreampools: bright, open spaces, matte tiles, and low‑poly palm trees conjure a euphoric dreamscape.
  • Level 4 — Dark Poolrooms: near‑total darkness, claustrophobic corridors, and thick black fog heighten tension.
  • Level 5 — Nostalgia Springs: neon‑lit, mall‑like architecture inspired by vaporwave aesthetics.
  • Level 6 — Oceanscape: a calm sea environment with strange sculptures, structures, and floating platforms that feel almost too perfect to be real.

Poolscape is a compact, atmosphere‑driven experience focused on exploration. It invites you to slow down, listen, and discover the quiet mysteries hidden within a retro‑styled Poolrooms universe.
