Backstory and premise unfold around Sarah Winstead, who dies in a car accident and awakens in a sinister realm called the Otherside. Reborn after a perilous encounter with a powerful entity, she soon discovers a growing ability to sense ghosts as they drift between the living world and the rifts that slash Echo Canyon. To find a path back, she partners with Jacob, an amateur ghost hunter who supplies gear and guidance, and together they pursue a mission to seal the rifts that spill spirits into the town.

The setting of Echo Canyon is haunted by a malevolent energy that drives residents to madness or worse. Your objective in each case is to capture photos of wandering apparitions—an activity that only becomes possible when the ghosts reveal themselves in the viewfinder. Some environments require you to solve environmental puzzles to expose hidden rooms or paths where spirits lurk.

Ghosts aren’t passive. When seen in the viewfinder, many will become hostile and assault you. Sustaining too many attacks drains your sanity, forcing a restart of the current case. You must monitor two vital resources: sanity and camera battery life. Scattered items across levels restore both, and collecting enough can keep you in the field longer. Items found during cases can be traded or purchased in a store, and you can upgrade various stats in a dedicated upgrade menu to enhance your chances on tougher cases.

Gameplay is built around a compact set of ghost-hunting tools: a camera for photos, a radar to gauge how close the nearest spirit is, and a spirit box for listening to otherworldly messages from static. An inventory system tracks collectibles, and a shop and upgrade system lets you tailor your loadout to your playstyle. The game embraces a retro, PSX-inspired visual style with low-poly 3D assets and atmospheric sound design, all driving a mysterious and compelling narrative.
