Take Root description
Take Root
In City N, the strongest earthquake in history shattered the metropolis and woke a strange alliance between living plants and household machines. Take Root is a cooperative colony simulator where you and a partner transform the ruined streets into a thriving settlement. Your base is a permanent hub built between expeditions, a base of operations that grows with you and feeds the next forays into the city’s districts.
Two species share the settlement at once, each controlled by a separate player. Roles and tasks are not fixed; you switch between construction, gathering, repair, scouting, and defense in real time as the mission unfolds. Between expeditions, you upgrade the hub, unlock new technologies, and expand your options for the next raid. Cooperation and flexible planning are essential to progress.
Plants and robots offer distinct paths to survival. Robots are sturdy and precise, excelling at heavy labor and frontline work, but they can be damaged by rain and cannot regenerate on their own. Any injury requires repairs at a dedicated station. Plants regenerate naturally and grow stronger with water, yet they are weaker in direct combat. They sense humidity and spores, helping scouting and adaptation to shifting environments.
Expeditions last roughly 1 to 1.5 hours. You raid city districts from the base, and a mission ends in one of two ways: a successful construction of an outpost that broadens your reach, or a forced retreat that teaches new constraints for the next attempt. Each outpost expands your control—opening new routes, technologies, and resources that feed back into the base between missions.
The world around City N is unpredictable. The closer you get to the epicenter, the stranger the surroundings become: sudden weather shifts, deadly anomalies, and encounters with mutated humans, unusually intelligent animals, or animated objects. Adaptability and teamwork keep you alive as danger lurks at every corner.
Progression and exploration go hand in hand. Each outpost grants access to fresh routes and capabilities, while base upgrades—repair modules, sensors, and new structures—shape what you can attempt on your next expedition. The game is designed for two players who share planning, synchronize their actions, and continually switch roles to meet evolving challenges. A single-player mode exists, but Take Root is balanced to deliver its best experience with two.
