Kriegsspiel ~ 7 Years' War description

Overview

Kriegsspiel ~ 7 Years' War is a real-time wargame that recreates the battles of the Seven Years' War (1756–1763). You command a general and lead diverse regiments—line infantry, field artillery, cavalry, hussars and more—amid a historically inspired theater of war. Your control is constrained by the era's courier-based communications: orders travel between you and your regiments by couriers, and reports flow back to inform your decisions.

Command and Control

  • You issue strategic orders to regiments and battalions on vast 3D battlefields (at least 100 square kilometers).
  • Regimental officers organize their units based on orders received, visible threats, and terrain.
  • Field of vision is limited; reports from afar come via couriers, and orders can be recorded to synchronize attacks or retreats.
  • Only regiments with a clear view of the General can receive a signal; the General can move, bolster nearby troops, or rally units, but lose the General means defeat.

Terrain, Vision and Movement

Battlefields are reconstructed from historical maps and topography. Terrain shapes line of sight, speed, protection and morale. Forests hide units with ambush advantages; light troops such as hussars can spot hidden units. Rivers, streams, roads, towns and fortifications each alter movement and defense, creating a living, strategic landscape.

Artificial Intelligence and Sensing

Both your side and the enemy rely on a smart staff that estimates supply, routes, and local balance of power. Reports and orders are interpreted within imperfect information, so players can misread the map or be misled by intercepted couriers. Nearby regiments can combine forces, while hidden units may strike from ambush if not detected.

Units, Supply and Morale

Unit effectiveness depends on supplies, morale and physical condition. Supplies flow from supply points and hinterlands through convoys to camps and then to regiments. Morale reacts to losses, nearby enemies and allies, and environmental factors. Physical condition worsens with fighting and fatigue, then recovers with rest. Experience raises bonuses for soldiers, officers, and the General, who can unlock specializations like better firing, endurance or ambush perks.

Campaign and Progression

The game features campaigns set in the Seven Years' War. You wage main battles and optional secondary engagements that yield rewards, units, or losses. After battles you earn resources to maintain, recruit, or rebuild forces. Officers and regiments gain levels, unlocking new bonuses and improving combat performance. You may assign specialists to enhance regiments, balancing maintenance costs with potential gains.

Kriegsspiel Realism

Rooted in the Kriegsspiel tradition, the game lets you act within the limits of an umpire-driven system: you control via orders, but what is executed depends on information available to the staff and the tempo of the battlefield. This real-time adaptation captures strategic depth and the tension of command during a historic conflict.
