Dwarven Alchemist — game description
Genre & setting: a traditional-modern roguelike set in a medieval fantasy world. Play as a dwarven alchemist striving to earn the title of Master Alchemist by brewing the legendary Poison of Annihilation—the only weapon capable of slaying the Great Wyrm.
Core gameplay: grid‑based, turn‑based tactical combat in procedurally generated dungeons. The game blends classic roguelike mechanics with a shopkeeping simulator, placing alchemy at the center of power. The environment is fully destructible, and stealth remains a viable option when needed.
Alchemy as your power: an in‑depth system where you create potions, poisons, explosives, gases, and even poisonous explosive gases. Effects are not just cosmetics; each alchemical product has practical in‑dungeon use. You can turn explosive powders on goblin swarms, or brew Fire Protection potions to survive magma caves. The art of alchemy is governed by a strict but elegant rule set: you manipulate magical effects using procedures such as calcination, fermentation, distillation, dissolution, and sublimation, aided by various laboratory apparatus and catalysts.
Materials & mechanics: every effect is tied to metals—your alchemy uses ores, coins, nails, and even junk metal found in the dungeon. You must remove unwanted effects and amplify the desirable ones while minimizing impurities, all with as few steps as possible. The number of possible combinations is near infinite, inviting inventive, elegant recipes you invent on the fly.
Lab, shop, and contracts: you run your own alchemist shop. Clients—dwarves and adventurers—order potions and mixtures, turning orders into organic mini‑quests that steer your dungeon runs. Refining rare ingredients requires quality equipment, and your laboratory starts modest but can be upgraded with coin. Unused ingredients can be refined and repurposed for your own needs.
Run structure & progression: every run begins with almost nothing besides your trusty flintlock pistol and a handful of potions. There is no traditional leveling system; power remains steady across runs. Weapons and non‑alchemy gear don’t persist between visits to town, but your workshop and business growth do. The dungeon world is a living ecosystem: monsters may clash, environmental hazards appear, and access to doors, traps, and gases can be overcome with alchemy.
Adaptive, death‑styled challenge: you won’t control every encounter, so you must improvise with what you find. A true hallmark is permadeath‑flavored risk without erasing campaign progress: normal mode preserves your lab and contracts with consequences, while a dedicated true permadeath mode offers a single‑life run designed to be beatable only by mastery.
Signature weapon & combat flexibility: your flintlock pistol remains your constant companion, capable of being loaded with custom explosive powders and metal‑based ammo. Even poisons can be crystalized and loaded as buckshot or healing crystals used strategically in battle.
