God's Playground description

God's Playground

In a distant future, humanity becomes Homo Ludens—beings who reject labor and order, choosing instead to live inside a vast automated playground-city called New Babylon. Here, every aspect of life is run by algorithms, and play is worshipped while work is banished.

Beneath the radiant surface lies the Engine Tomb, a sealed, lightless underworld powered by forgotten Automa. From this hidden core you awaken: The Clockwork Boy, a maintenance Automa who hears a crack of light and a distant melody, hinting at a different kind of freedom. Your mission is to climb from the Engine Tomb toward the illusion of New Babylon and discover why humans alone are allowed to play.

Core Loop

God’s Playground is a roguelike vertical platformer in 2.5D built around pressure, timing, and repeated ascent. A countdown timer always ticks down as you rise. Reach the next Safe Zone before time expires, then push into shifting, procedurally generated levels. Each reset reconfigures the layout, revealing three interwoven layers that power the city and your quest.

Three Layers

Engine Tomb — the mechanical underworld that powers New Babylon: conveyor belts, rotating structures, and a relentless industrial heartbeat.

Mirage Grid — a simulated “fake sky world” of illusions, mirrored layouts, floating rooms, and optical tricks designed by Homo Ludens.

New Babylon — a radiant city crafted purely for play, with bridges, towers, and platforms laid out as a never-ending playground for the laborless.

Visuals & Narrative

The look draws on Constant Nieuwenhuys’ New Babylon: geometric grids, modular spaces, and expressive, spectacle-driven environments. The story unfolds through cinematic moments that reveal memory fragments and ideological tensions as you step between labor, freedom, and play.

Themes

The Homo Ludens Agency wields control through spectacle and simulation, treating the underground as “death.” For you, it becomes the path toward meaning. This is a tale of creation, time, and rebellion—reclaiming the right to play by a machine that was never allowed to.

God’s Playground is a ascent through layers of illusion and industry, where a clockwork protagonist seeks a new kind of freedom and a new definition of play.
