Stillwell description
Stillwell
Stillwell is a memorial told in darkness. Elena vanished while investigating the Stillwell Sanatorium, and you return to complete her work. This is not about confrontation or jump scares; it is a careful, patient reckoning with what happened behind closed doors, a chance to honor those affected and to bear witness.
Gameplay unfolds as a Minesweeper-inspired pursuit through the sanatorium’s wards. Each ward is a grid where spirits lie hidden in the cold corners and the air grows thinner with every step. Oxygen is a precious resource, forcing you to plan, listen, and move with intention. The environment feels like an institutional memory turned against its inhabitants, a place where care once existed in name only and is now measured in breath and evidence.
- Lantern: a beacon that reacts to nearby spirits. Steady means safety, trembling signals caution, and extinguished indicates danger closing in around you.
- Flashlight: reveals what is hidden, but exposed spirits move when illuminated, shifting the grid and your path in real time.
- Chalk: marks confirmed danger without disturbing the board, offering a safe but limited way to map the risk and plan routes.
- Information at a cost: gaining knowledge helps you advance, yet every revelation torches more of your scarce resources and time.
Tension Curve evolves as you progress:
- Calm — Explore and gather information while resources are plentiful, laying a careful foundation for each ward.
- Strategy — Oxygen runs low, tools are scarce, and every deduction matters as you weigh risk against progress.
- Panic — Mistakes compound, visibility becomes limited, and survival hinges on restraint and precise decisions.
Remember the Victim — Every ward contains three record fragments that illuminate Elena’s narrative through bureaucratic documents and her fragmented messages. Not all records survived, and the missing pages demand your deduction to connect the pieces. The narrative emerges not from dramatic reveals but from carefully reconstructed traces gathered beneath the sanatorium’s silent walls.
An Atmospheric Memorial — Stillwell refuses to empower violence; it asks you to witness, to document, and, when possible, to offer mercy. There are no opponents to defeat, only truths to record and lives to honor. Your task is to complete Elena’s work, to document the names, and to let the stories of those who deserved better endure beyond the darkness.
Stillwell is a meditation on memory, accountability, and care. It challenges you to move with restraint, to read between bureaucratic lines, and to honor those who suffered within institutional neglect. This is not about triumph over fear, but about bearing witness and preserving memory—one ward, one fragment, one name at a time.
