Anesthesia description
Anesthesia — Description
Anesthesia is a third-person horror puzzle game that follows a young girl who awakens inside a dreamlike, nightmarish hospital. The corridors breathe with unsettling life, whispers echo through empty rooms, and a dangerous presence lurks as you search for a means to escape. The experience centers on mood and tension as much as clever challenges, inviting players to feel vulnerable while uncovering the mystery behind the nightmare. The environment shifts and distorts, with doors appearing where there were none and reflections hinting at secrets beyond sight.
Gameplay unfolds from a steady third-person perspective, guiding the protagonist through claustrophobic wards, surreal examination rooms, and shifting chambers that bend perception. Exploration rewards you with clues, hidden items, and environmental hints that gradually reveal both the path to freedom and fragments of memory that illuminate the story. The design emphasizes deliberate pacing, careful observation, and patient experimentation rather than rapid action. The non-linear layout lets you choose routes, discover side rooms that hold memory fragments, and encounter optional challenges that deepen the sense of discovery.
Puzzles are varied and tightly woven into the setting. You will encounter mechanisms, codes, interactive devices, and environmental puzzles that require insight, timing, and a keen eye for detail. As you solve each challenge, you uncover new clues and unlock previously inaccessible areas, bringing you closer to the escape while heightening the hospital’s looming danger. The game rewards thoughtful play, encouraging you to study how the space responds to your actions and how narrative threads connect across rooms, sometimes revealing multiple pathways to progress and different outcomes upon replay.
The atmosphere is haunting and immersive: a muted, eerie soundtrack, flickering lights, muffled footsteps, and distant machinery creating a constant sense of being watched. The hospital feels both surreal and intimate, a place where safety is never guaranteed and the threat can reveal itself at any moment. Visuals blend realism with dreamlike distortions, using lighting and composition to amplify tension while offering moments of quiet introspection that propel the story forward toward an as-yet-unknown resolution.
Development note: Anesthesia was created as a student project at DigiPen Institute of Technology and is presented for educational purposes. It showcases independent game design, puzzle-driven storytelling, and focused creative ambition within a small team. While it offers a complete, standalone experience, the project remains primarily an exploratory work rather than a broad commercial release.
