Appetite of the Abyss description

Appetite of the Abyss

A survival cooking roguelite where every run is a delicate balance between feeding a dangerous monster and keeping yourself alive. Manage scarce resources, build temporary structures with a limited card deck, and cook meals through deliberate preparation choices as threats loom in a shifting world.

Core loop

  • Draw a limited set of cards each day to place buildings that gather resources, process ingredients, or provide utility.
  • Buildings occupy scarce space, consume shared resources, and vanish after delivering a finite output, forcing constant adaptation.
  • Feed the monster before its hunger, aggression, and mood turn against you.

Monsters and tastes

Each run features a different creature with unique traits and temperament. Hunger decay, aggression, and reactions to mistakes vary, and every monster has a hidden taste preference you must infer through reactions and consequences. The game never directly reveals what it likes, so you learn by observing and adapting.

Cooking system

Cooking is driven by preparation choices rather than reflex actions. Meals are defined by how you prepare them—stirring style, heat level, chopping method, and more—so the same recipe can succeed or fail depending on your technique. Experiment, watch reactions, and gradually uncover each monster’s preferences to permanently improve your meals.

Forecasts and risk

Before danger strikes, you choose forecasted paths that hint at raids, weather effects, or events. Paths come in normal, medium, and hard difficulties with rewards for survived runs. Choosing the wrong route can cost resources, destroy buildings, or cause long-term setbacks.

Progression

Earn Monster’s Gold by cooking well, feeding efficiently, and surviving escalating threats. Gold unlocks permanent upgrades between runs—new cards, improved cooking options, and enhanced monster interactions—letting you tailor future starts.

End of run

At the end of each run, the monster weighs your performance through reactive dialogue. Success and failures shape the creature’s responses and your ongoing strategy.
