Grief — Game Description

Grief is a competitive, turn-based digital board game for 2–5 players that centers on card play and hand management. Plan your moves, outmaneuver opponents, and be the first to complete all five stages of grief, each represented by a unique Grief Token. The digital presentation captures the feel of a physical board game, where every decision can shift the balance of the match.

• Turn structure: On each turn you may perform only one action from three options: draw cards, claim a location, or exchange Grief Tokens.
• Locations and claims: Locations are claimed by playing the right combinations of card colors and point values. You must manage a limited hand, choosing the exact moment to use the right cards, or risk losing the target to a faster opponent.
• Grief Tokens and victory: Each claimed location can reward one or more Grief Tokens, with each token representing a stage of grief. The first player to collect all five distinct Tokens wins the game.

Cards and effects: Cards come from five different decks that provide points and a variety of effects. Some cards activate when played, others when discarded, and some trigger the moment they are drawn. The order in which you draw, hold, or play cards creates tense, tactical decisions — do you hold onto a card for a potential late surge, or sacrifice it for an immediate advantage?

Interaction and disruption: Grief emphasizes direct player interaction. You can steal cards, disrupt turns, break hands, or temporarily block advantages to shape the evolving battlefield. Advance too quickly through the stages, and you become a bigger target, inviting counterplay and shifting power dynamics.

Thematic design: Inspired by the psychological stages of grief, the game intertwines loss and emotional struggle with its core mechanics. A stylized, abstract presentation and restrained visual style reinforce each decision, creating a somber, focused atmosphere that complements strategic play.
