Return to Roots — Description

Return to Roots is a roguelike co‑op horror game for up to 6 players. Descend into the living great tree, uncover a terrible secret, and survive by turning found items into resources for your elevator as you push deeper into the roots.

Gameplay Basics

Each floor is uniquely generated with themed layouts, vibes, and custom music. You might roam a mall for compostable items, stroll through a garden, or check into a hotel room. Coordinate with your team to avoid or outsmart a roster of monsters whose danger levels scale with depth. Teamwork and planning are essential to progress.

Items & Upgrades

Discover 100+ items of varying rarities per floor. Consumables turn into waste when used; passive items grant on‑hit effects and stat boosts; burden items are risky to hold but worth more. Examples range from a distractible dodgeball, a gleech that values blood sharing, to a legendary cursed skull offering speed and stamina efficiency at a grave cost. Build a toolkit that fits your team’s strategy.

Monsters & Encounters

Depth brings tougher adversaries. Some foes are simple, like a goat that imitates monster sounds; some are deceptive traders; others are deadly, such as a snail that devours items and can swallow you whole, or a fast, elusive birdhouse. Understanding and anticipating your enemies is key to survival.

Meta‑Progression & Gear

After a run, you earn credits to spend on reusable equipment that you can bring into future floors. You’ll manage a limited inventory to craft a build that suits your playstyle and team synergy. Examples include the Mini Broomstick for stamina after picking up items, and the Baby Snail to swallow floor items and later spit them back as a mucus ball equal to the swallowed haul. Some gear is passive, some conditional, and some requires water, a renewable resource you replenish in various ways.

Shrines, Crafting & Choices

Shrines scattered through floors offer item duplication, trading, and refreshment. Finishing a floor lets you vote on random upgrade cards that benefit your team or elevator. Certain items can be combined or crafted, adding depth to your planning. If you can’t finish a floor, an Emergency Skip is available, though the next level will be especially challenging.

Why Play

Return to Roots blends tense co‑op horror with strategic item management and dynamic, replayable floors. Dive into unpredictable runs, master synergies between items and teammates, and uncover the mystery lying in the roots of the great tree.
