Cover The Background description

Cover The Background — Puzzle Challenge

Cover The Background is a compact, highly replayable puzzle game featuring over 100 levels that fuse logic, spatial reasoning, and precise placement. Levels start simple and steadily introduce new mechanics, demanding sharper planning as you advance.

How to play

In each level you are given a set of pieces. Pick up a piece and rotate it to fit onto a grid of black squares. Each level has a limited number of pieces, so you must choose and rotate wisely. The aim is to cover every black square on the background with your placed pieces until no uncovered black squares remain.

Most levels have more than one valid solution, so experimentation is encouraged. You can explore different rotations and configurations to find a path that clears the grid without running out of pieces.

Special mechanics

  • Red squares: They block placement if any square of a piece would land on them.
  • Deletion squares: A piece placed on top erases the square beneath the deletion square.
  • Pressure plates: They hide certain squares on the background. You must place a piece on top to activate or reveal them.

Pieces and progression

As you reach later levels, you will encounter Locked Pieces. These pieces cannot be rotated and start in their final orientation. Locking can be helpful, since you know how it sits, but it can also be frustrating when the last required piece cannot be rotated to fit perfectly.

All levels revolve around covering the black squares, with several different mechanics interwoven to keep the challenge fresh. The difficulty ramps up, but the game balances it so players can discover multiple routes to victory rather than brute forcing every level.

Playtime and scope

The game is designed as a concise, focused puzzle experience. Time to complete varies by player, due to many levels’ differing difficulty, but play tests show the entire game can be finished in roughly five hours. Some players may breeze through easier stages, while others invest more time conquering tougher layouts.

Whether you have a minute or an afternoon to spare, the game offers bite-sized puzzles with a clear objective: fill the grid, outsmart the special squares, and manage your limited pieces to win each level.
