Rootnote puts you in the role of a forest guardian connected to the Tree of Life. The experience is presented as a compact prototype with two playable stages: you begin in the early phase and, after completing the opening, time fast-forwards to an advanced stage where only a diseased area remains. This setup lets you test abilities at the start and with all powers unlocked later.

The core goal is to reunite the root to restore the Tree of Life. Healing requires at least 70% of the forest to be healthy; if the threshold isn’t met, the disease spreads and the Tree weakens. If you delay too long, the Tree of Life dies and the game ends.

• Collect the songs of the guardians and use their abilities to fight the spreading disease.
• Listen to your surroundings to discover useful objects that are connected to the Tree of Life and aid your journey.
• Discover new modes of transportation as you explore, including a boat to cross a large lake and a grappling hook to reach higher areas.
• Uncover secret gates and hidden treasures hidden throughout the forest.
• Decorate your home with a wide range of mementos earned along the path.

Through your connection as a guardian, you experience the forest’s musical side—turning sound into power. Balanced exploration, timely decisions, and strategic use of abilities determine how quickly you can restore the root and save the forest.
