Yakshini Lokam description
Yakshini Lokam — Fairy Realm of Strategy
Yakshini Lokam fuses action-packed tactical gameplay with ancient Indian board games dating back to the 2nd Century CE. Play as a family of four from Hyderabad, India who are spirited away to a magical world just as they sit down for family game night. The Sanskrit title roughly translates to “Fairy Realm,” setting a whimsical stage for a strategic adventure.
Game World and Flow
The game world comprises a network of battle arenas linked by an overworld. In the overworld, you control the entire family at once, moving in a single-file line through exotic biomes and meeting NPC challengers. When you encounter a challenger, you are transported to a gridded battle arena where combat becomes turn-based.
In combat you control one character at a time against a squad of computer-controlled opponents. The objective mirrors classic board strategy: capture every member of the opposing squad, while defeat means the four family members are captured.
Core Mechanics
Each character action is limited by a finite pool of Action Points (AP). AP are spent to move, aim, or activate items. When all characters (and opponents) have acted, the round ends and the next round begins. Most battles must be won within a prescribed number of rounds, encouraging strategic planning and timely risk-taking.
Movement is performed in two ways. Step lets a character move one space per 1 AP in a chosen direction. Boost unleashes a magical dice item to move multiple spaces in a single burst, costing 1 AP and consuming the item from the inventory. Boosting also charges magical energy, allowing you to blast through destructible obstacles and push distant boulders into opponents.
Opponents and Bosses
The realm is filled with mythical creatures. Makaras, elephant–alligator hybrids, attack from afar with water projectiles and may shoot during their turn or reactively as an overwatch when a family member enters sight. Nagas slither like ladders in the classic game Snakes and Ladders, sliding players to different board positions. Bosses are larger, tougher foes that withstand multiple hits and demand focused strategy to defeat.
Items and Board Toys
Defeat opponents using an arsenal drawn from traditional Indian board games: Dhayam barrel dice, Cowrie Shells, sliding Carrom pucks, and arcing Kara Billa sticks. These items function both as combat tools and puzzle-solving aids to navigate obstacles and outmaneuver foes.
Feel and Tone
Yakshini Lokam emphasizes fast-paced, tactile action playable with a controller. Actions feel embodied, producing bumps, blasts, and bounces as if truly inhabiting a physical space. The story of a family’s quest to escape to ordinary life evokes the spirit of whimsical adventures like Spirited Away, delivering a friendly, cozy, and accessible fantasy experience.
