GutterPunk description

GutterPunk

Overview: GutterPunk is a first‑person, fast‑paced action game set in a brutalist, concrete city where every wall is a runway and every street hides a spark of rebellion. Move with blistering speed, chain acrobatic maneuvers, and push through a dystopian world driven by momentum and reflexes. Your aim is to outrun the surveillance of a rigid regime and fuel a rising rebellion with every run.

Story & Setting: You step into the shoes of Char, a young, energetic woman born in The Upper City who rejects factory labor as slavery. She travels down to the Lower City, where she organizes secret underground raves during the day and coordinates resistance at night. The environment is a harsh, neon‑glow of brutalist architecture—every corner, every corridor is a test of speed, precision, and nerve. The goal is not only personal survival but to spark a larger uprising and prove it on the leaderboards as well as on the street.

Gameplay & Mechanics: Core action revolves around wall‑running that fills an energy meter. Use that energy to perform rapid jumps, dashes, slides, and executing finishing blows in quick succession. Energetic wall runs let you string together movements into fluid sequences, turning the city into your playground and battleground. Engaging enemy robots is optional for success, but landing killing blows in smooth chains grants a temporary speed boost, giving you the edge to maintain speed and extend combos. A time‑slow mechanic adds tactical depth, letting you plan routes and execute complex sequences more reliably, though it does not slow the actual countdown timer.

Objectives & Pace: The challenge is to reach the end of each run as fast as possible, earning victory for the rebellion and climbing the leaderboard. The design rewards risk‑reward decisions, precise timing, and the ability to improvise routes on the fly. Mastery comes from mastering flow: how to recover energy, how to chain actions, and when to push through tighter sections with confidence.

Style & Atmosphere: A gritty, brutalist city serves as the stage for high‑octane parkour combat. The soundtrack pulses with the vibe of a street‑level uprising, matching the fast tempo of movement and combat with neon‑tinged visuals and textured environments that emphasize speed and grit.

Development: GutterPunk is a student project created by six peers for their third year in the Digital Arts & Entertainment bachelor program at Hogeschool West‑Vlaanderen in Belgium. The music is composed by Louis Delisle, a student at the Royal Conservatoire of Ghent, whose score reinforces the game’s energetic rhythm and rebellious mood.
