Static Maw description

Static Maw — Description

Static Maw is a first-person psychological horror that centers on tension, atmosphere, and slow-burn dread. The setting is a remote antenna station where your job is to maintain a signal that should not exist.

You play as a newly hired Night Operator at StaticCore Systems. Each shift reveals something you aren’t ready for, and your goal is simple on the surface: keep the station running. In practice, every night becomes more unstable, more oppressive, and harder to endure.

Gameplay and mechanics

Explore the decaying transmission facility from a first-person perspective, performing maintenance tasks to keep crucial systems alive. Repair antennas, restart failing infrastructure, and use your computer to manage operations. Your tools are precious—use them wisely to survive.

Your kit includes a Radar and Camera System to monitor hostile entities, a Silence Mode to reduce noise and avoid detection, and a single Flashlight to illuminate the darkness when the environment turns hostile. The night evolves as you progress: systems fail more often, environments subtly shift, and pressure rises with every additional night.

Shifts end only when you complete all required tasks on the PC. With each new shift, more hostile creatures appear, demanding greater awareness. Unpredictable events interrupt routine work and force quick, decisive choices. There is no combat—survival hinges on awareness, timing, and your ability to manage stress while the environment works against you.

Horror approach

Static Maw favors psychological horror over jump scares. Fear is built through immersive sound design and oppressive silence, visual distortion and environmental anomalies, and a gradual loss of control over familiar systems. You may feel watched more than threatened, and the signal you stabilize becomes a tangible presence—the more stable your control, the more it seems to observe you.

Lore and storytelling

Decades ago the station detected a transmission with no identifiable source. It did not weaken with distance or follow known patterns. After a classified experiment in 1984, the station’s director, Gerald, became obsessed. Employees quit, some disappeared, others spoke less and less. The station was never shut down. Now it’s your shift. The story unfolds through environmental storytelling, logs, notes, and system messages, as the station’s behavior changes over time. Nothing is explicitly explained—the meaning of the signal and its desires is something you must infer.
