The Assessment description

The Assessment

Step into the role of an archaeologist drawn by a lucrative but perilous assignment: assess the long-forgotten Himitsu Castle for restoration, and you must complete your survey tonight. The setting is Japan during the Sengoku Period, around 1550 AD, a time of upheaval and superstition. Himitsu Castle rises solemnly under Goro Oda's ambitious command, while Aka and her son seek a brighter future away from a village that barely sustains them. They accept Goro’s offer on the condition that they never leave the castle grounds, binding their fate to the fortress. As you approach, the castle feels alive with whispers and tremors, and you sense a curse that has slowed its construction for generations: torrents of rain that flood the courtyards, sudden storms that shake the masonry, and earthquakes that split the ground beneath moving walls. Goro’s desperation grows with every setback, and morality is strained as he makes choices that could doom or redeem those within and around these walls. Your task is to perform assessments across the sprawling complex, piece together what happened here, and decide whether the structure should be saved, or if it must be destroyed to break the curse. The clock ticks, and every discovery tests memory, loyalty, and your own judgment about ambition, legacy, and the human cost of restoration.

Gameplay Overview

  • Use spiritual tools to influence evil energy: wield relics that bend ambient forces, unlock sealed chambers, and calm vengeful spirits. Puzzles adapt to your choices and each tool reveals a fragment of the castle’s hidden past.
  • Assess various parts of the castle: inspect halls, towers, kitchens, storerooms, and hidden passages. Some areas yield new clues when revisited, while others echo the events that once shaped the site.
  • Access locations in the castle and in memories: traverse physical spaces and slip into memories to illuminate the truth behind the curse, uncovering motives and consequences that still resonate.
  • Short and succinct narrative experience: the story unfolds through crisp discoveries, notes, and memory vignettes, delivering a tight, atmospheric arc with meaningful choices.
  • Switch between 3rd and 1st person views: alternate perspectives to examine scenes from different angles, enhancing immediacy or distance as needed.
  • Confront troubled memories in different locations: each site holds a personal confrontation with those who suffered or shaped the castle’s fate, challenging your judgments about right and wrong.

By weighing what you uncover against the castle’s history and the impact on nearby lives, you shape the outcome: restore the fortress and its memories, or expose its dangers and let it fade. The Assessment delivers a compact, atmospheric journey that blends investigative exploration with supernatural mystery, inviting you to balance curiosity with consequence in a single night of decisions that echo beyond the walls.
