Crypt of the Shadow King description
Crypt of the Shadow King
Descend into a crumbling church's crypt where ancient wards falter. Vaelthar the Undying, an elven lord who bound his soul to shadow magic after his people's slaughter, sits upon a throne of black iron and bone as seals weaken. You are called to venture below, through peril and mystery, to halt a reborn god from waking the world to darkness.
A couch co‑op RPG for 1–4 players played entirely in the terminal. Build a party, equip gear, and push through a three‑act campaign that spans the crypt, the overworld of Thornfield, and the Shadowfell, ending in a final confrontation with the Shadow King.
Build Your Party: Play solo or share the screen with up to four adventurers, each crafting a distinct hero. Choose from 12 classes—Fighter, Rogue, Wizard, Cleric, Barbarian, Paladin, Ranger, Bard, Druid, Sorcerer, Warlock, and Monk—paired with 12 races that include Humans, High Elves, Dwarves, Halflings, Dragonborn, and Tieflings, each with unique traits. Add a background, assign ability scores, and set alignment to taste.
Combat Systems: Engage on a tactical grid with movement, positioning, flanking, and cover, or switch to a streamlined theater‑of‑the‑mind mode. The full 5th‑edition combat engine powers every encounter: initiative, attack rolls versus AC, saving throws, advantage and disadvantage, opportunity attacks, conditions, concentration, and death saves.
Magic and Tools: Cast 146 spells from cantrips to 5th level across eight schools of magic. Manage spell slots, track concentration, and prepare spells for eligible classes. Loot includes 27 weapon types, 13 armor sets, and 37 magic items—plus cursed treasures, potions, and equipment that may help or hinder your quest.
Enemies are tactically smart through threat‑scoring AI. Goblins use stealth and numbers, undead shamble with relentlessness, and the Shadow King wields multi‑phase abilities, lair effects, and legendary actions that punish careless play.
Act I — The Crypt (30 rooms): Beneath the church, through burial halls, a poisoned corridor, a stone chime puzzle, bioluminescent caverns, a goblin camp, a guarded library, and the throne room where Vaelthar awaits amid necrotic fog and shadowy tendrils.
Act II — Thornfield and the Overworld (29 rooms): A hub town with tavern and markets, the Whispering Woods, a perilous road, Ravenmoor’s secrets, and the Abandoned Mine—home to the Shadow Priest Malachar and a ritual to tear open the Shadowfell.
Act III — The Shadowfell (42 rooms): A planar breach, ash‑scorched wastes, a ruined elven city’s library, and the Rift Nexus—a floating, fractured span above an endless void. The final arena hosts the reborn Shadow King within a pillar of living darkness.
Optional narration brings a voice to every key moment, while dynamic music shifts between exploration, combat, and boss encounters. Prefer silence? disable audio for a pure text experience.
The Shadow King is a villain with depth and history. Vaelthar’s journal entries line the dungeon walls, and you’ll come to understand his motive—even as you must defeat him twice: first in his crypt, then within the Shadowfell’s Rift Nexus.
Prepare your party, choose your path, and face a saga where every room, riddle, and fight drives you toward a climactic struggle to keep the night from rising.
