Piecebreaker description

Death of a Grandmaster

Death of a Grandmaster is a strategic roguelike where every run becomes a fresh build. You draft rewards, chart routes into shops and events, and stack synergies that bend your formation into a new ruleset with each attempt. Each choice compounds node by node, from opener deployment to late‑run boards where multiple effects can fire at once, creating dynamic and surprising combat and puzzle moments.

The game offers substantial breadth for replayability. You will face 71 encounters in a single run—45 combat bouts, 21 events, and 5 shops—plus 3 selectable run identities to tailor your approach. Your path through these encounters is driven by the rewards you draft and the routes you take, with shop offerings and event outcomes shaping the build as you go.

Build variety is immense. There are 213 rewards to draft and 484 shop items scattered across field, mid, late, and final tiers. The combination of these rewards and items enables countless synergies and playstyles, encouraging experimentation while rewarding thoughtful planning and adaptation.

Choose from three distinctive run identities to anchor your strategy:

  • Vanguard Bastion: front‑line shields, controlled space, and punishing counterpunches.
  • Arcane Gambit: tempo spikes, early initiative, and king‑hunt finishes.
  • Graveyard Swarm: reborn attrition that wins by trading bodies efficiently.

Battles are deterministic, with replayability driven by route choices, rewards, shop selections, and the evolving synergies between fights. Each run unfolds a unique rhythm, forcing you to improvise while leaning on your chosen identity and the collected tools.

Victory comes by capturing the enemy king, or by eliminating every enemy piece until only their king remains. The game includes a guided tutorial and a mechanic sandbox so new players can learn quickly and still scale into high‑depth runs, ensuring a smooth ramp from beginner to veteran strategist.
