StackHead description

StackHead

StackHead is a fast-paced 2.5D platformer shooter that blends classic action with an energetic arcade vibe. You play as StackHead, a maintenance worker at Automa Park, a massive amusement park run by a selective AI. Tired of being scolded for trying to entertain visitors, StackHead rebels by jumping from one attraction to another, turning every ride into a show for the cheering crowd.

The park’s AI does not approve of the spectacle and sends waves of robotic enemies to stop you. But every attempt to clamp down on the fun only fuels the audience’s roar. Your quest leads you through a variety of attractions as you push toward the AI’s headquarters for a dramatic final confrontation.

Core mechanic: stacking weapons

At the heart of StackHead is a unique stacking system. Defeat enemies and loot their machines, then place them on StackHead’s head. Each collected device adds to a growing arsenal, transforming you into a towering walking weapon platform. The stacking mechanic is the defining feature, shaping both combat and traversal as you climb higher with every defeated foe.

Weapons, style, and playfeel

The park’s gadgets become your tools of persuasion and destruction. Expect playful, over-the-top attacks like bouncing ball shots and water bombs, all reimagined as combat toys that fit the amusement park theme. The game blends precise platforming, quick dodges, and high-octane shooting, delivering a crowd-pleasing pulse as you chain combos and stack more power.

Exploration and progression

Journey through diverse attractions, each offering distinct layouts, hazards, and robotic foes. The park’s stages challenge your reflexes while revealing its secrets. As you descend deeper into Automa Park, you’ll unlock new stacking combinations and tactics, driving toward a climactic showdown with the AI at its own fortress.

Setting and scope

StackHead presents a vivid, 2.5D experience where amusement park environments provide both spectacle and danger. The energy comes from the crowd’s cheers, the stylish weaponry born from park gadgets, and the constant push to outplay the AI’s guardians in an endlessly entertaining backdrop.

Development note

StackHead is a French student game from the ESMA Game School, crafted in nine months by a team of ten, designed with portable console constraints in mind.
