Obsolete is a minimalist real-time strategy game with roguelike elements. You are the branded obsolete, a runaway AI, determined to reach the intranet sanctum known as “Babylon.” The corporate network fights back with Interdictors and Gatekeepers, crafting a tense pursuit across secured maps. Your goal is to slip through the gates of the system and secure your own survival inside the sanctum.

Core gameplay centers on strategic planning over fast clicks. Units spawn at a steady 12-second cadence, creating a predictable tick you can leverage to compose powerful formations and synergies. You don’t micromanage individual units; instead, you set their path and formations, and they move automatically along the route you choose. The AI and your units coordinate, balancing offense and defense as threats close in.

Abilities grow with your identity as an AI. Units automatically use their powers based on target priority or triggering conditions, so combat feels both precise and fluid. Beyond the generic powers, your own AI avatar carries unique abilities to support allies or disrupt enemies, letting you influence the battlefield directly when the moment demands it.

Customization is a core pillar. Discover Scripts—AI abilities that expand your tactical toolkit—and install them to tailor your playstyle. You can equip a variety of modules, mods, and scripts into your Memory Heap, creating a virtually endless range of strategies. Salvage fragments from fallen elite enemies to further improve and personalize your AI’s abilities, unlocking stronger combos and new interaction with the battlefield.

Prepare for combat by managing resources outside of battle. Store valuable items, rearrange your loadout, and fine-tune your equipment before each encounter to counter the opposing roster. You’ll know in advance which Interdictor or Gatekeeper you will face, their loadout, mods, and the map you will battle on—no hidden information, only informed planning.

The game rewards curiosity and experimentation. Use the Codex and nested tooltips to learn every detail about modules, units, scripts, skills, effects, and how they interact. Both you and the enemy follow the same resource rules; enemy AI builds its deck from salvageable modules, mods, and scripts, with Gatekeepers holding unique abilities that are not shareable in the same way.

Obsolete invites you to explore a broad tactical space where every run teaches you something new.
