The Outer Islands description

Set in 1956, the Outer Islands off the coast of Scotland have been sealed off for twenty years. Industry fell silent, people disappeared, and the archipelago remains locked away under tight Ministry of Defence oversight. You assume the role of Detective Constable Shepherd, dispatched to uncover what happened to the inhabitants and why the islands were quarantined.

Starting from Gondola Island, the lone safe harbour, you explore a remote, atmospheric coastline and a network of abandoned outposts. Your journey continues through the internal transport systems, leading you to places like Asylum Rock, Pandora’s Rock, and other isolated settlements. The world is rendered in a detailed 1950s setting, with dynamic weather and lighting that shift as you investigate.

Play in first person as you search buildings, examine objects, and collect documents. Solve environmental puzzles to unlock new areas, restore machinery, and access sealed structures. Your inventory is used to combine and apply items, operate devices, and reveal hidden pathways. Each step forward reveals more of the island’s history and the mysterious community that once thrived there.

The Outer Islands emphasizes atmosphere and environmental storytelling over action. There is no combat and no time pressure—progress comes from patient observation, careful deduction, and connecting clues across multiple interconnected locations. Fragments of a larger mystery are scattered in records, personal effects, and the remnants of industrial infrastructure, demanding you piece together a coherent history from disparate traces.

Key features:

  • Fully explorable archipelago with distinct locations
  • Inventory system with item collection and on-the-fly combinations
  • Environmental puzzles and machinery restoration
  • Document and evidence tracking to map your progress
  • Interactive camera mechanics to inspect details up close
  • Dynamic weather and lighting that heighten the mood of the 1950s landscape

As development continues, new areas and revelations will expand the mystery, guiding you toward a deeper understanding of what truly happened on the Outer Islands and why the world above kept them sealed away.
