Following her adoptive mother, You Yuan travels to Zhuhe City, a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, in the year 2019. A surge in the will to die triggers a spike in abnormal suicidal behavior, drawing You Yuan toward a single, terrifying target: the Reason, the ultimate embodiment of the wish to end it all.

Her investigation leads to a startling discovery—the Reason is Wei Yue, her male classmate. She pursues him to gain his trust, hoping to erase this seemingly gentle boy. Yet as their daily lives fracture, Wei Yue becomes her only refuge. Witnessing countless deaths and feeling the weight of her inability to save everyone fractures You Yuan's sanity, while Wei Yue becomes the one who consoles her.
