Fever Tilt description
Starbuster is a ruthless zero‑G sport of exploitation and sabotage for two players. In a floating arena of frozen blocks, you pilot a ship with a gamepad, aim, and thrust through the space to mine gems from inside blocks and push them into your goal to score. The first player to 5 goals wins. Matches run roughly 3–7 minutes, depending on how aggressively you play.
Core mechanics
- Laser — Your primary tool. Hold to fire a cluster of five beams that heat blocks. Blocks thaw and activate after 0.3 seconds of heat, then shatter into halves at 0.5 seconds. Halves break into quarters, and quarters vaporize—each stage revealing any gem inside. The laser charges for 3 seconds and recharges slowly when not in use, so energy management is vital.
- Forcefield — A tractor beam that pulls nearby objects toward your ship. Drag gems toward your goal, reposition barriers, or steal items your opponent is chasing. It costs less energy than the laser, making it your go‑to for maneuvering.
- Projectile Explosives — Collectible missiles that spawn on the board. Launch them to create massive explosions that scatter blocks, shatter fragments, and disable your foe. You can carry up to two at a time, and they accelerate after launch.
- Heat & Disable — Lasers and explosions generate heat on ships. If your ship overheats after about 10 seconds of accumulated heat, you’re disabled for 3 seconds. Heat also slows you, creating a growing vulnerability and a sabotage window for your opponent.
The arena — Each match generates a unique, procedurally created board with roughly 100 frozen blocks arranged in organic clusters. Clears zones around each spawn and goal keep play fair. Blocks conceal gems and pickups; laser them open, guide gems with your forcefield, and score. Fragments drift in zero‑G and can be weaponized with explosions for strategic advantage.
Scoring & match flow — Only one gem exists on the board at a time. Scoring slows time for a dramatic moment, then a new gem spawns. Own goals count against you if you accidentally push a gem into your opponent’s goal. The first player to 5 goals wins, with adjustable victory thresholds for different playstyles.
Game modes & features — Quick Match offers a direct 1v1 local battle with gamepad support. In Tournament, engage in a full single‑elimination bracket for up to 32 players, with a web portal for signup, bracket management, per‑match stats tracking (goals, blocks busted, laser seconds, distance traveled, and more), and export/import of results. Customize with 8 player colors and names, use an on‑screen keyboard for entry, and enjoy dynamic camera zoom, slow‑motion goals, and dramatic victories. Steam achievements, cloud saves, and rich presence accompany the experience, with a retro low‑resolution option for variety.
Born at Noisebridge and refined through community playtesting, Starbuster blends physics‑driven combat with strategic gem control for a competitive, fast‑paced duel in space.
