Dry Meadow description
Dry Meadow
Dry Meadow is an atmospheric old-school first-person shooter built around a focused narrative journey. Set in an alternate history along the Finland–Soviet border, the game pushes a quirky, gzdoom-inspired engine to its limits while preserving a distinct voice that nods to classic designers. Drawing inspiration from Stalker, Doom, and Half-Life, it aims to blend lucid storytelling with tight, survival-oriented action, delivering a world that feels both familiar and eerily off-kilter.
A catastrophe of unknown proportions—the particle wave—from the USSR ripples across the map and throws large swaths of south-eastern Finland into disarray. You wander through altered lands in search of the disaster’s origin, tracing strange effects that bend the ordinary into the uncanny. You are alone on your mission, but the possibility remains that others are trapped within the zone of alienation and may share their stories if you reach them. Clues lie in ruined towns, foggy swamps, and forests that seem to listen as much as they watch. The world breathes with a haunting, patient rhythm, inviting careful exploration rather than headlong rushes.
Gameplay blends shooter intensity with survival finesse. The land is as dangerous as its monsters: corrupted fauna, enigmatic devices, and weather that can turn a routine patrol into a fight for survival. At dusk you build fires for warmth and light; at dawn you craft traps and simple defenses to survive another day. Daylight wanes quickly, forcing you to weigh the risks of venturing after dark against sheltering near a flame. Progress comes not only from finding enemies defeated, but from piecing together history—the clues you gather, the items you repurpose, and the nightly radio broadcasts that drift through the air, offering fragments of the world’s unfolding story. Environments range from abandoned towns swallowed by silence to fog-choked swamps and silent forests that seem to hold their own memories. The visuals emphasize mood over flash, with a grounded aesthetic that heightens tension, while your gear grows out of scavenged parts—each decision about what to carry, what to craft, and where to go impacting your fate in tangible ways.
