When the Light Dies description
When the Light Dies
Gemelle Games’ fifth title is a 2D retro RPG that channels the classic SNES-era Final Fantasy vibe. Built on the same spirit as Undefeated and The Tale of the Common Man, it emphasizes strategic combat, exploration, and a tightly plotted story.
Story
You step into the boots of Rick, a mercenary who must fix a mess after a commission goes wrong: a woman’s life is in danger and his fee has vanished. The journey pulls together a doubtful group: a woman with no battle experience, her spurned lover, the lover’s valet who would rather be elsewhere and hopes his master chooses a different path, and a mage who has been out of action for 92 years. The binding thread is a possessed knife that drags Anna toward deeper darkness. With time slipping away, they must uncover what possesses the blade and how to free Anna before the light is extinguished forever.
Core Gameplay
The game blends classic exploration with a modern design edge. Combat uses the Battle Predictive Charge Turn Battle System (PCTB), letting you adapt tactics as battles unfold rather than guess outcomes. Bonuses reward personal initiative—characters gain extra power when they personally defeat enemies.
Party and Customization
Lead an active party of five, unlocking deeper strategic options in every engagement. Customize your experience by choosing the order in which characters learn new skills and by renaming members if you wish. You’ll navigate a range of difficulties—Easy, Normal, Hard, and Legendary—to suit your play style.
Progression and Exploration
Advance through a story-driven arc complemented by side quests and secret rooms. After every three completed quests, you’ll receive bonuses to choose from, shaping how your team grows. The game emphasizes exploration, offering numerous discoveries that contribute to an Exploration Count at the end for bragging rights and a chance to push for a higher score on subsequent playthroughs.
Length and Replay
Expect around 10 hours of core playtime, with meaningful side content and routes that encourage replay to master the systems, unlock all bonuses, and test different party setups.
When the Light Dies delivers a compact, story-driven 2D RPG experience with a strategic battle system, a memorable cast, and ample room for customization and exploration. Will you guide Anna back into the light, or let the darkness claim her?
