With the family convinced he may still be alive, they hire a bounty hunter named MacNaughton to bring back news of him—dead or alive—for a substantial reward. Yet the trail is not theirs alone: other factions are also pursuing the Eye, knowing it is the key to locating the other Seeds that could awaken Vala and grant whoever possesses them control of his formidable power.

Legend speaks of a time when the god Indra ruled the heavens until he was betrayed by Vala, an Asura who overthrew the order of the demigods. Vala’s rise ended through a deceitful mock ritual in which he was bound and murdered; his body was shattered and transformed into powerful gem seeds. These seeds fell across the Earth, turning their landing sites into mines of immense energy. Nine celestial gods each claimed one seed, storing within it the power of a different realm. The union of all nine, the Navaratna, would grant colossal magical force. Fearful of Vala’s possible return, Indra scattered the seeds and entrusted their guardians to a handful of loyal protectors. Centuries of seekers have followed, yet most have failed to recover all nine gems.
