Overview: Nian Monste is a tense survival horror where you must outpace the patrols of the Year Beasts. Roam a connected set of mountain villages, search through abandoned homes, and craft life-saving tools by uncovering the weaknesses of each threat. Your goal is to endure until the dawn at 6:00, when the nightmare may end.

Storyline: You inhabit a mountain village as a left-behind child. The younger generation has fled to the cities, leaving behind elders and children who scrape by. The Spring Festival is a rare chance for reunion, yet this year you face silence from your parents and the sickly calm of a village grieving in advance. On the stroke of midnight, ominous sounds—dog barks, distant footsteps, and whispering winds—signal the arrival of the night’s danger as you try to survive your family’s absence and the looming threat.

Vigil gameplay: Before a hunt, the entity Xi conjures an enchantment called Tree Rings, creating a space where time freezes for those inside a limited radius. Outside observers cannot peer in, and trapped lives cannot escape. To push back from a dead end, you must seize control: unleash the explosive and flashing scares that Xi fears, and use the red—a color the beasts cannot see—to mask your movements. Gradually you weaken the barrier, advance the flow of time, and strive to survive until the early hours of 6:00.

Difficulty and threats: The challenge grows as time passes and events intertwine—blizzards, sudden accelerations, and other long-lasting penalties complicate every decision. The Year Beasts are a collective name for four archetypes—Evening, Ghost, Disaster, and Leave. In their respective windows, the remaining three beasts join the hunt, each bringing distinct mechanics that you must adapt to in order to endure.

Search and craft: Dozens of houses await exploration. You’ll rummage through boxes for essentials like firewood to light stoves, and food to keep your body warm and your spirit high. Reading books grants knowledge, enabling you to craft and improvise a range of clever props and progressively more powerful weapons. Every nest of supplies could be your lifeline when the threats close in.
