Skinscribing description

Skinscribing

In a world held in stasis by warring gods, your mortal hands must craft the history of a dying empire. When the monarch of the most powerful realm dies suddenly, you leave your abbess to perform the ancient death rites and ready the Court for the arrival of a Graven Deity. You have six days to complete sacred tasks, the most crucial one being to draft and tattoo the reign’s history onto the New Heir, using the ashes from the Former King’s corpse. This is your last chance to record or erase voices that could shape the future.

This is a multi-session, full-body tattooing ritual. Time is tight, and you are mortal—you will not survive to see the new era. Every choice to archive or censor, every voice preserved or lost, shapes the world that comes after. The record you tattoo is all that remains of the truth you can uncover.

Play and system

Guided by the Veiled Sister, you gain two crucial tools: a scalpel-liner and a set of “Helping Hands.” The game unfolds with two cursors, minigames, and tasks requiring multiple hands or your chosen hand. Depending on your relationship with the gods, outcomes shift across a branching narrative with multiple endings. Your decisions extend beyond conversations—where you go, who you speak to, who you pray to at night, and what you tattoo on which client all influence the world and its possible futures.

Tattooing, memory, and discovery

The tattoo process mirrors your movement, pressure, and ink you source or craft. The piece you craft becomes a living reflection of you, informing future clients as they arrive with their own histories and hidden tattoos. The scalpel can pierce layers to reveal secrets—inside the surrounding environment and within the clients’ bodies. Old tattoos and whispered tales lie beneath the first skin, waiting to be uncovered by your careful touch.

Art, world, and tone

Skinscribing presents full hand-drawn 2D art with wraparound environments, brought to life by Val Wise. The game weaves cosmic folk horror, bodies and memories, and the act of tattooing as historical record-making while you navigate grief as your world collapses around you. The final blessing comes as an Eel familiar, offering antibiotic slime or “green soap” to sustain you through the rite.

In this story-driven experience, every line drawn and every choice made writes the shape of the next era. Will your arc preserve truth, or sculpt a new legend for a world that cannot endure?
