Lock & Stone description
Lock & Stone: Direhold
You awaken after a caving accident, finding yourself in the fabled yet rarely seen city of Direhold. The tunnels twist into a sprawling dwarven hold, where damp stone, ancient forges, rune-carved doors, and mysterious machinery hum with old power. You must survive the winding halls and the oppressive hush of the city as you search for a way out, amid creeping dread and lurking shadows. This is a survival horror puzzle adventure where wits, nerves, and careful exploration are your only lifelines.
You navigate interconnected rooms, chasms, and winding passages, moving deeper into a labyrinth that reshapes itself around your choices. You search for Rune Slates, decipher their meanings, and re-activate dormant mechanisms to open new paths. Each solved puzzle reveals additional sections of Direhold and brings you closer to escape, while the city’s lore unfolds around you in fragments and echoes of its former inhabitants.
Rune Slates and puzzles: The keys to progression are etched with ancient symbols. You must interpret the runes to activate mechanisms and unlock hidden corridors. As you study the rune language, you uncover the functions of long-abandoned technologies and gain insight into the city’s engineering secrets and its tragic history.
Notes, lore, and discovery: Along the way you’ll uncover notes and clues left by former inhabitants. They illuminate Direhold’s history, the rise and fall of its rulers, and the stubborn pride that doomed the city. The more you discover, the deeper the city’s mysteries become—and the more perilous the truth may prove to be.
Creatures and threats: Deep beneath the mountain, sinister beings have claimed the city as their own. Skeletal remnants wander mindlessly, cursed dwarves cling to shattered pride, and hobgoblins taunt intruders. You must stay vigilant, manage scarce resources, and use the environment to outmaneuver, evade, or survive each encounter.
Atmosphere and pacing: Lock & Stone emphasizes puzzle-focused exploration over reflex-based combat. It rewards patient observation, careful deduction, and thoughtful interaction with the world. Navigate the architecture, read the runes, and piece together the city’s story to progress—one careful step at a time. The experience is designed for approximately 3–6 hours of single-player play per run, with potential for longer journeys on subsequent explorations.
The Direhold Puzzle Box: Direhold itself is a living puzzle. Exploring pathways, understanding the environment, and learning from the lore unlocks its secrets. Your success hinges on interpreting the Rune Slates, coordinating actions to awaken ancient pathways, and choosing how far you venture into Lock & Stone before escape finally beckons.
