The Class 86 is notable for having been adapted for mountain routes, with the first ten units featuring counter pressure brakes. Amidst the turmoil of World War II, simpler 'transitional war' variants emerged, minimizing construction and maintenance challenges. The lifeline of the Class 86 extended into the 1970s, with Deutsche Bundesbahn retiring its fleet fully by 1974.
